About this book It is now fourteen years since we collaborated in the writing of our first research methods book. In ’09 2009 the fifth model was published (Saunders et al., 2009). The success of this publication suggests that research methods are a popular subject with business and management students. This may be so.
But we believe it has more regarding the fact research methods is a complicated area- one where it is simple to do things, but significantly less easy to do things right. Whenever we prepared the first book we had one overall objective at heart. That was to write a book in a way that emerged as near as is possible to how we taught our students.
By this we imply that we wished to be clear and straightforward, and describe things in a real way that lost none of the complexity, or the academic rigor of the topic. Over time this objective has not changed. We feel in the same way passionate about clear communication as we did back 1997. However, things in the wonderful world of business and management education have transformed since 1997, which written book reflects those changes.

In 1997 the standard necessity was for undergraduate students in their final year, to attempt a large bit of research which included them in collecting their own data and was assessed by means of a written project report. This is now often false. The reason why we suspect is that you will choose those chapters that meet your own needs.
This may be because you are in one of the categories we described earlier, have specific questions about the research process you need to answer, or it might be that your research methods lecturers specify certain chapters. We’ve written the chapters in such a way that they standalone. To some extent they attract on materials from other chapters straight undoubtedly. Where this is so, we’ve cross- referenced to the relevant chapter. But the point remains that you can grab any section in isolation and make sense of it. This written publication is not just a self-study text message in the truest sense; there are no relevant questions with model answers!
However, we’ve included points in each section which help an component of self-employed learning. Each section begins with a listing of content which we call ‘Why read this chapter? ‘ This gives you some notion of the chapter content and the approach we have delivered to this issue being discussed. Each chapter consists of a small number of examples of research called ‘Research in Practice’.
These serve to illustrate in a practical manner a few of the points being manufactured in the chapter, in much the same way as a lecturer would give practical examples in research methods lecture. Chapter 1 deals with the first issue you will come across in the research process: choosing the right research topic. We suggest some novel ways that you might decide upon your topic, offer guidance in deciding what constitutes a highly effective research topic, and consider some topics which may be problematic.
In the latter part of the chapter we deal with the issue of defining suitable research questions and goals. The section ends with a dialogue on what is meant by the all important term ‘theory’. In chapter 2 we approach the main topic of the books review. You can expect some practical recommendations along the way you may go about approaching your literature review and actually conducting it, by using it particularly.
